Analyzing a website is not limited to checking its loading speed or looking at a traffic dashboard. The process involves cross-referencing multiple data sources, identifying indicators that are truly linked to business objectives, and taking into account a changing technical context, particularly with the emergence of AI-generated responses in Google search results.

Decoupling between impressions and clicks: what reports do not show

Traditional analytics tools display traffic curves and impression volumes. These metrics remain useful, but they mask a recent phenomenon: impressions can increase without clicks following.

This discrepancy is particularly observed when Google displays AI Overviews, these AI-generated summaries at the top of the page. The user receives a direct answer and does not click on the organic link, even if the site’s page is mentioned in the response.

For the analysis to be reliable, this signal must be checked by type of search intent (informational, commercial, transactional) rather than at the overall site level. A page that loses clicks on informational queries does not have the same impact as a product page whose click-through rate collapses. The best practice is to segment Google Search Console data by query groups and cross-reference it with conversions recorded in the analytics tool.

Before going further in interpreting the data, it is useful to analyze my website following a structured methodology that covers the technical and behavioral fundamentals.

Attribution of AI visits: limits of web analytics tools

Google Search Console has recently offered a report dedicated to AI Overviews. This report details the pages, countries, devices, and dates of appearance. However, it does not yet provide clicks or associated queries in a granular way.

This gap seriously complicates interpretation. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are mixed with other Google clicks in standard reports. Site-side analytics tools also do not allow for proper isolation of this source.

What this changes in practice

An effective analysis of organic traffic can no longer rely on a single data source. At a minimum, three elements must be cross-referenced:

  • Search Console data (impressions, positions, pages indexed in AI Overviews)
  • Analytics data (sessions, page views, conversion paths)
  • A manual tracking of priority queries to check if the site appears in AI responses on strategic terms

This triple verification takes time, but it is the only way to distinguish a traffic drop due to a technical issue from a drop caused by the redistribution of clicks towards AI responses.

Visibility in AI responses: a distinct indicator from traditional SEO

Being mentioned in an AI-generated response does not produce the same effects as occupying the first organic position. Presence in an AI response does not guarantee an increase in traffic. Available behavioral analyses indicate that users click less often on traditional results when an AI summary is displayed.

This does not mean that this visibility is useless. It can enhance brand awareness, establish perceived expertise, or generate delayed visits. The challenge is to separately measure the frequency of citation in AI responses and actual commercial performance (leads, sales, registrations).

Indicators to monitor in addition to SEO positions

  • The frequency of the site’s appearance in AI Overviews on priority queries
  • The conversion rate by channel, isolating as much as possible traditional organic traffic from traffic potentially influenced by AI responses
  • The evolution of brand traffic (queries containing the site or company name), which may signal an indirect effect of AI visibility

Measuring AI visibility separately from traditional SEO is becoming a necessary reflex for any serious website analysis. Average positions alone are no longer sufficient to assess a site’s organic performance.

Technical audit and content: the foundation before any interpretation

No behavioral or traffic analysis is valuable if the technical foundation of the site has blocking defects. A technical audit prioritizes indexing, loading speed, and mobile compatibility.

Pages not indexed by search engines will not appear in any traffic reports. Excessive loading times skew bounce rate data. Poor mobile navigation distorts user journeys recorded by analytics tools.

Content and search intent

Content analysis is not limited to counting the keywords present on each page. It involves checking whether the content meets the actual intent of the user typing a given query. A page optimized for a commercial keyword but written in a purely informational tone will attract visitors who will not convert.

The intersection between Search Console queries and conversion rates by page allows for the identification of these discrepancies. High-traffic pages but low conversion deserve a rewrite focused on action, while low-traffic pages with good conversion rates signal untapped visibility potential.

Analyzing a website in 2026 relies on a continuous cross-referencing of technical sources, behavioral data, and commercial indicators. The available tools facilitate data collection, but interpretation remains the determining link. With the increasing integration of AI responses into search results, standard reports only tell part of the story. Complementing with manual tracking of strategic queries and fine segmentation by intent remains the most reliable method for guiding decisions.
